Freaquently Asked Questions

Q: Is the high school year completed in the US recognized in Romania?

A: The high school year completed in the US can be recognised upon return to the country. This depends on each individual case. More information on this subject can be found under the section on Equivalence of Studies and can also be requested from the National Centre for the Recognition and Equivalence of Diplomas. Equivalency is strictly the responsibility of the scholarship holders, as American Councils does not deal with this issue.

Q: If my son/daughter will be a FLEX scholar, do I have to host an American student instead?

A: No. The program does not work the other way around. You don't have to host anyone in Romania.

Q: Is there a minimum GPA that a FLEX applicant must have?

A: No. There is no such average, but a good academic record is required. In any case, grades are not a decisive selection criterion.

Q: Do FLEX applicants need to have an internationally recognised English language certificate?

A: No. No such certificate is required. Even if they have such a certificate, they will still have to pass all FLEX-related tests.

Q: Can the scholar choose the host family or city in which to live in the US?

A: No. The scholar cannot choose the host family or city. FLEX works with specialized placement organizations that deal with this issue and provide placements that are as conducive as possible for the scholarship recipient. Also, you cannot propose a host family to live with in the US.

Q: For high school students with disabilities, does the program also cover the cost of a chaperone?

A: No. Travel to the US for FLEX cannot be done with a chaperone. Scholars with disabilities are given all the support they need, but a chaperone cannot go with them to the US.

Q: Can the scholar be visited in the US by parents, relatives or friends?

A: The programme does not encourage such visits, but the final decision rests with the placement organisation and the host family where the student lives during the scholarship period.

Q: What happens if the child does not settle in the US?

A: FLEX Scholars can request termination and return home at any time without the natural family having to pay penalties or other fees. The FLEX program is completely free of charge. No fees are charged, even if the scholar withdraws from the program for reasons related to the scholar.

Q: Do I need to have certain international English language certificates?

A: No. The FLEX programme does not require any English language certificates or certificates. If you already have it, it cannot be used for equivalence at any of the selection stages.

Q: Will I receive special feedback on my FLEX application?

A: FLEX selections are made entirely in the United States of America, by several specialist panels, and no feedback can be given to any student's application at any stage of the selection, regardless of the result.

Q: If I get the scholarship, can I come home for holidays (e.g. Christmas)?

A: No. This is not possible for scholarship holders. The scholarship is continuous and does not involve breaks for holidays.

Q: If I make an account on the platform and fill in the application, will it be sent automatically?

A: No. The application is not sent automatically. You have to hit the submit button yourself before the application deadline and you will receive a confirmation email and an application code. Good luck!
